RFID vs. EM security in libraries.
For decades, the standard way to protect a library collection was the electromagnetic (EM) strip: a sliver of metal glued into the spine, magnetized to arm it and demagnetized at checkout. Many libraries still run EM today, and it deserves a fair comparison rather than a sales pitch.
What EM actually is
An EM strip is a one-bit system. The strip is either armed or disarmed, and the gate at the door detects exactly one thing: an armed strip passing through. It has no idea which item triggered it — only that something did. Circulation and security are two separate mechanical acts: staff check the book out in one system, then desensitize the strip in another motion.
Its strengths are real: the strips are cheap, the technology is mature, and it does deter casual walk-outs.
Where the one bit runs out
Every limitation of EM follows from that single bit:
- Anonymous alarms. The gate can say "something", never "this item". Investigating an alarm means guesswork at the door.
- Two systems to keep aligned. A book can be checked out but still armed, or returned but still disarmed. Every mismatch is either a false alarm or a silent walk-out.
- Security is all it does. The strip cannot help with self-service, inventory, or finding a lost item — it carries no identity.
- Manual re-arming. Protection depends on a human remembering a second gesture, thousands of times a year.
What changes with identity-based RFID
An RFID tag carries the item's identifier, so the gate can ask a better question. Instead of "is anything armed?", it asks: is this specific item allowed to leave right now? The answer comes from live circulation data — a checked-out book passes, anything else raises an alarm that names the item, the time, and the gate.
Because security is derived from loan status, there is no second act to forget. Lending an item authorizes it; returning it protects it again. The same tag then does double and triple duty: it powers the self-service kiosk, walks inventory along the shelves, and finds mislaid volumes — one infrastructure instead of parallel ones.
The honest trade-offs
RFID tags cost more per piece than EM strips, and a conversion project takes real effort — every item needs a tag, and the transition has to be planned around normal operations (here is what that looks like). Metal-heavy media can need special handling. And an identity-based gate is only as good as the identity discipline behind it: if tags, barcodes, and records disagree, you inherit the confusion at the door.
That last point is the real decision. EM asks little of your data and gives little back. Identity-based RFID asks that your items be named consistently — and repays it with security that knows what it is protecting, plus self-service and inventory from the same tags.
The short version
If the only problem to solve is casual theft, EM still does that job. If the goal is a library where lending, security, and inventory behave as one system, the collection needs an identity — and that is RFID's actual advantage, not the alarm at the door.
